In this paper we present EEDP, the Efficient
and Energy-aware Information Dissemination protocol
for multihop sensor networks. EEDP has two main
components: NDP, a neighbor discovery protocol used
to collect topology and energy information about the
two-hop neighborhood of each node and AGSC, an
augmented greedy set cover algorithm used to compute
a connected dominating set in a distributed way, but
taking into account the energy level of the 1-hop
neighbors when selecting the nodes which will relay a
given message. EEDP can be used as a general and
efficient solution to disseminate information over a network. This is very important since many of the most
popular routing protocols for sensor networks such as
directed diffusion and some kinds of geographic routing
use flooding in some of their phases. On the other hand,
EEDP can take advantage of topology information
gathered by MAC protocols such as the traffic-adaptive
medium access protocol (TRAMA) or the flow-aware
medium access protocol to further improve energy
efficiency (FLAMA).
