Resumen This paper studies the performance of a wireless sensor net- work (WSN) with cognitive radio (CR) capabilities to gather information about structural health monitoring (SHM) of buildings in case of seis- mic activity. In order to efficiently use the resources of the network and considering that the WSN will be installed in an office or home build- ings, we propose the use of the empty (white) spaces in a conventional cellular system. Thus, the WSN will act as a secondary network, which does not affect the quality of service of the primary network, since it is proposed to work in an overlay structure. The main performance param- eter of the primary network is the blocking probability since a Blocked Call Cleared (BCC) system is considered. We consider that the primary network is composed of a cellular system where multiple services can be provided. This entails different distributions for the service time of users occupying a channel of the primary network. Hence, this blocking prob- ability is calculated in this work considering that the service time has Erlang and hyper exponential distributions. Furthermore, we evaluate the performance of the secondary network composed of the sensor net- work in terms of average packet delay and average energy consumption and study the impact of the Erlang and hyper exponential distribution of the primary users on the secondary system
