Resumen Since technological trends focused on creating increasingly compact devices with limited resources in terms of processing and energy consumption, many companies have adapted their computational systems, initially very heavy for these devices. Such a processes must include security layers to prevent information breaches. In this sense, researchers and developers have attempted to adapt robust encryption schemes. Nevertheless, they can present vulnerabilities to attackers or excessively long processing times due to device limitations, which is unfeasible in most applications. This work proposes a compact version of the Encryption System based on Cellular Automata (ESCA), designed specifically for implementation in Internet of Things (IoT) environments. The main modification consists in remove certain modules from the robust version of the ESCA scheme and replacing them with a S-Box that provide effective security measures, maintaining a balance between the lightness of the scheme and its robustness. To evaluate the security of our compact version, tests were performed using digital images. Obtained results show that provided security is sufficient for using on the intended platforms, guaranteeing enough protection in IoT environments. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2024.
